Annotating a PDF using the text-box toolbar item

This item is about creating annotations to a pre-existing PDF in a database.
I have noted that there is a previous thread for this question but the answer does not work.
I am using DT3 3.9.4 on MacOS 14.3.

If the PDF in my database is not read-only in DT3, I can add text boxes at various places within the document, and a pop-up dialog appears into which I must type the required annotation. However the facilities to change the text style and a few other properties are disabled.
see below:

I can get the font dialog open with Command-T but it has no effect on the text in the text box.
This is a bit annoying since the annotated text size is huge compared with the PDF text size.
I have tried all the usual MacOS user interface shortcuts and menu items for that sort of thing but to no avail.
I have checked the DT3 settings and I cannot see a default font/text size setting for text box annotations there either.

So, would someone be able to pass on the secret to me please?
