If it makes you feel any better, I only back up once a week so if I made an error like this I’d be in the same boat as you 
Accidents happen.
(Like you, I don’t like Time Machine, and I know I’m not going to do a manual backup every day because I simply cannot be bothered 
I’ve made a trade-off with the level of risk I am willing to tolerate.)
